Convergence is a major theme running across many of the next generation wireless communication research and standardization being pursued worldwide. Convergence has multiple dimensions including multi-standard connectivity, multi-mode devices, multiple services and applications support with a strong business case. Achieving a good user experience with seamless global access and mobility require systems to support adaptivity and reconfigurability at various layers. Software Defined Radio (SDR) approach addresses many of the reconfigurable radio issues. Cognitive radio brings in adaptations based on environment sensing. Context aware computing is a strong enabling technology being pursued by many researchers for this. While working on the convergence between different wireless technologies, the melding of wireless infrastructure with the enterprise business infrastructure also needs attention. Wireless service providers, systems integrators, technology companies and research communities need to create a cohesive interface with enterprise technology infrastructure to realize the goal of global convergence.
Objective of this workshop is to provide insight to some of the prominent European wireless research projects and discuss Indian scenarios for their potential applications and adaptations. It is also an opportunity for the European research community to interact with the Indian researchers and technologists working in the related areas to identify potential avenues for cooperation and collaboration, in general. In particular, Indian organizations would get the possibility for establishing partnerships for the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Research Programme.
